Local 'Guys and Dolls' Have Onstage Performance Opportunity
(Press Release 02-25-08)
Hank Mooney, Office of Public Information

Theatre Eastern will hold open auditions for this year’s spring musical, Guys and Dolls by Frank Loesser, Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows this week.

Interested adults and high school students from the surrounding areas will have an opportunity to strut their stuff 6 p.m. Thursday, February 28, in Mitchell Auditorium on the Wilburton campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College.

Guys and Dolls is a big, classic Broadway musical with a lot of heart and loads of laughs, set in the late 1940s. It tells the musical story of Nathan Detroit, a small-time New York gambler just looking for a place to hold his game; Adelaide, his showgirl fiancée of 14 years who just wants to get that ring on her finger at last; Sky Masterson, the high roller who never falls for love and Sarah Brown, crusader for the Salvation Army who’s searching for souls to save – and just maybe, her own Mr. Right along the way. There are also lots of fun character roles and great chorus parts for Gamblers, Showgirls and Salvation Army Members in this delightful musical comedy which boasts classic hit songs like “Luck Be a Lady.”

Audiences may remember Guys and Dolls from the movie version which starred a young Frank Sinatra as the lovable commitment-phobe Nathan, and an equally-young Marlon Brando as the charming Sky Masterson. Guys and Dolls was previously produced at Eastern in 1976 and is part of the 2008 Season, celebrating Eastern’s Centennial.

The show will be directed by Theatre Instructor, Melissa Heath Lee and Music Instructors, Paul Enis and Mary Ford will direct the Music. Local music teacher and Children’s Theatre Director, Dottie Minshall, will choreograph the dancing. Adult and teen actors, dancers, singers and musicians of any level of experience are encouraged to audition. Auditions will include cold readings from the script, learning a short piece of a dance and singing 16 bars of music or a simple song. Rehearsals will begin in March, and the production will run April 24-26. Call Melissa Lee at 918-465-1758 for more information.
