Certified Lifeguard Training Offered On Wilburton Campus
(Press Release 02-15-08)
Hank Mooney, Office of Public Information

If you’re looking for a summer job, it’s that time of the year, according to water safety instructor Loma Messex at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton.

“There is quite a demand for lifeguards and swimming instructors each year,” she said.

Eastern will be offering two Red Cross certified courses in lifeguard training during the spring semester. The first course will be February 25 through March 2 followed by a second class April 7 - 13. The classes are scheduled from 6-10 p.m. weeknights and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the weekend on the Wilburton campus.

Water Safety Instructor Course (WSI) follows April 28-May 5. Tuition for the lifeguard course is $79.00 and books cost $71. Students that are high school junior and seniors and have taken the ACT test may qualify to take the course for college credit.

A student must be at least 15 to enroll in Lifeguard Training and at least 16 for WSI, Messex says, and students need to contact Messex before enrolling in WSI at (918) 465-1731 to be sure his or her skills qualify for the course.

“Water safety instructors are in demand in southeastern Oklahoma,” she says, “since the WSI course is needed by individuals to qualify to give swimming lessons in area pools.

“If a student wants to be able to train lifeguards, they need to take LGI (Lifeguard Instructor Course) which has a prerequisite of Lifeguard Training and must be at least 17 years old.”
