Hank Mooney, Office of Public Information

Two Eastern Oklahoma State College athletes were honored April 29 with the prestigious Larry Stone Award. Sophomores Amy Searcy, of Bixby, and Carter Browning, of Ada, were selected as the recipients of the award at Eastern’s 41st Annual Larry Stone All Sports Banquet held on the Wilburton campus.

Searcy graduated May 2 with a physical education degree and an overall grade point average of 3.8. The pitcher’s 34 victories in 2007 set a new school record for most single-season wins. This year she has 15 wins for the Lady Mountaineer’s softball team and has thrown two no-hitters against Region II Conference opponents. Searcy has 158 strikeouts on the year with a 2.82 ERA. Off of the softball field, she is active in the Baptist Collegiate Ministries and is president of Eastern’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Browning also graduated May 2 with a degree in business administration and an overall grade point average of 3.88. Browning is a pitcher with an ERA of 3.22 for this year’s nationally-ranked Mountaineer baseball team. Off of the baseball field, Browning is a member of Eastern’s Honor Society, Phi Theta Kappa, is on the President’s Honor Roll and is a Presidential Scholar. He is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Baptist Collegiate Ministries and is a talented pianist.

Larry Stone honorees are selected on the basis of overall contribution to the spirit of athletics, teamwork, determination, unselfishness and citizenship. The late Larry Stone was an Eastern football and baseball player in the early 1960s. Stone went on to a successful baseball career at Northeastern State College. Marine Lt. Stone was killed in combat while on patrol in Vietnam.

Eastern alumnus, Dr. R. Henry Migliore, was on hand to award Searcy and Browning at the banquet. Dr. Migliore lettered in football and basketball while at Eastern, and was a friend and teammate of Stone’s. He, along with his former teammates and friends, set up the Larry Stone Award in 1968 to honor those athletes who have carried on the Eastern spirit.
