'Active
Shooter' Class To Be Offered On Wilburton College Campus
(Press Release
11-10-08)
Hank Mooney, Office of Public Information
Eastern
Oklahoma State College Campus Police Department will host an Active
Shooter Class for area emergency responders beginning 8 a.m. Saturday
(November 15) in Mitchell Hall Auditorium.
The free instruction
is being provided by Darrell Moody from the Tulsa County Sheriff’s
Department.
Eastern Campus Police Chief, Blaine Villines says the all-day
program will be presented in two parts and everyone, especially from Latimer
County, who may be involved in emergency operations is invited and encouraged
to attend. From 8 a.m. until noon, the program will be instructional in the auditorium.
The remaining interactive portion will be a police practicum involving learning
how to respond to an active shooter situation.
“Thoughout the years a number of lives have been lost
during active shooter incidents across the nation.” Villines said.
“It’s not something that anyone wants to happen
or to be involved with. But it has happened and will surely happen again ----
somewhere. We must be prepared for an incident like this should it come to Latimer
County.
“Active Shooter incidents have occurred at public schools,
at higher education institutions, public and private companies and corporations,” he
said.
Villines says that the methodology involved in handling the
situation has changed throughout the years.
Today the philosophy is that the Active Shooter incident is
a rapidly changing tactical event. Law enforcement is now advised to be aggressive
and save as many lives as possible, as quickly as possible.
