Receive Calculators From Eastern

McAlester High School freshman Devin Hill accepts a TI-Nspire calculator from
Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP Project Director Linda Morgan. Eastern's
GEAR UP program is working in 23 area schools, serving over 1,450 students. Each
GEAR UP student who is "Algebra Ready" received a calculator.
"We will continue the calculator program next year," said Morgan. "Current
8th grade students in GEAR UP will receive a calculator when they become "Algebra
Ready."
Eastern Oklahoma State College received a $6.7 million federal GEAR
UP grant and is in the third year of implementation. Eastern has partnered
with 23 area schools to provide students, teachers, and parents with
additional educational opportunities. The grant is currently serving
8th and 9th grade students at Antlers, Bokoshe, Buffalo Valley, Canadian,
Clayton, Crowder, Indianola, Keota, Kiowa, LeFlore, McCurtain, Moyers,
Panola, Pittsburg, Quinton, Red Oak, Whitesboro, and Wilburton Public
Schools. The grant is serving 9th grade students at Haileyville, Hartshorne,
McAlester, Rattan, and Talihina.

McAlester High School Principal Randy Hughes and Counselor Mia
Smith for students to use on Oklahoma Core Curriculum Tests. McAlester
also received a "big check" to be used to promote
Oklahoma's Promise (OHLAP a unique program for eighth-, ninth- and 10th-grade
students (homeschool students must be age 13, 14 or 15) that will help pay
for their college education if their family's income is $50,000 or less at

Hartshorne's
GEAR UP Lead Teacher Jennifer Hunt received 65 Texas Instruments
TI-30X IIS calculators for students to use on Oklahoma Core Curriculum
Tests. Hartshorne also received a "big check" to
be used to promote Oklahoma's Promise (OHLAP a unique program
for eighth-, ninth- and 10th-grade students (homeschool students
must be age 13, 14 or 15) that will help pay for their college
education if their family's income is $50,000 or less at the
