More Than 400 Area Students
Attend Mountaineer Monday More than 400 area high school seniors from 54 area schools attended a "day of fun, food and information" organizers said designed to acquaint them with the college setting and responsibilities. Each year Mountaineer Monday organizers design the day of activities around a current theme. "Take the Journey" highlighted the senior day this year at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton. Senior activities began with an opening session in Mitchell Hall Auditorium with Eastern Cheer and Dance Teams kicking off the session followed by a welcome from Eastern President Dr. Steve Smith, an update by Dean of Students Dr. Sally Davis and student leader introductions by Vice President for Student Affairs Leah McLaughlin. "We try to remember how challenging the first day of college can be," McLaughlin said. "So, we invite the seniors to campus to give them an opportunity to see what it's all about. "They get to meet a number of college students during the day as well as some of the college faculty and staff. They finish the day knowing a little bit better what college is all about and are not quite as apprehensive," she said. The high school seniors toured the campus with student leaders at the helm. Activities for the seniors included tours of Eastern academic divisions, special group sessions, lunch, a dance in the student union ballroom complete with T-shirt distribution and a cookout in front of the gym before conference basketball games to end the full day of activities. Schools attending the activities included: Wilburton, Porum, Gans, Talihina, Panola, Clayton, Bokoshe, Buffalo Valley, LeFlore, Canadian, Wetumka, Quinton, Cameron, Haileyville, Hartshorne, Indianola, Yukon, Webbers Falls, Moss, Antlers, Kinta, Konawa, Rattan, Alex, Mannford, Kiowa, Allen, Pittsburg, Ada, Bennington, Byng, Soper, Jones Academy, Stewart, Savanna, Roland, Battiest, Broken Bow, Eufaula, Red Oak, Crowder, Valliant, Hugo, Whitesboro, McCurtain, Spiro, Stigler, McAlester, Pauls Valley, Wynnewood, Poteau, Idabel and Columbus, KA.
