Earn State Awards By Eastern Journalism Student Krystal Baker The student publications at Eastern Oklahoma State College won top state awards at newspaper and yearbook competitions held in April at Northeastern State University and the Oklahoma Collegiate Press Association in Stillwater. The “Statesman” newspaper and “Mountaineer” yearbook staffs at Eastern Oklahoma State College brought home 10 awards from the 39th Annual Northeastern State University Media Day held April 2 on the Tahlequah campus. The two publications were also awarded “Overall Excellence in Newspapers”, the top newspaper prize at the competition, and received third place for yearbook. “I am very proud of our achievement,” said Kristen Turner, Journalism Instructor and “Statesman” and “Mountaineer” adviser. “Most people don’t realize that these publications are entirely student-produced. I am always pleased that all of the long hours and extra effort has been rewarded.” Eastern’s publications have traditionally done very well at these competitions in the over 30 years that the school has participated. At the competitions, Eastern’s entries were judged against several other Oklahoma two and four- year colleges in several different categories. The newspaper categories were based on issues submitted from the 2008-09 school year. The yearbook categories were based on a combination of the 2008 and the 2009 editions. In all, the publications brought home 23 awards. “We are continuing Eastern’s long-standing tradition of excellence in publications and we have a great time publishing them,” Turner said.
