Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP Web/Computer Tech Specialist Presents Workshop at 2010 NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference

George Larson Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP Web/Computer Tech Specialist George Larson presented a workshop, “From Data Collections to Reports: Finding the Link” during the 2010 NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference—GEARing UP for Excellence: Linking Programs, Policy & Practice—in Washington, DC.

The event provided participants with an opportunity to look to the future by assessing the program’s performance, refining strategies, and infusing new practices to improve services. This is the eleventh year in which NCCEP has convened the GEAR UP community for the purpose of sharing best practices, exemplary models, and effective strategies designed to expand college access and success for low–income students.

Larson’s workshop focused on the GEAR UP tracking software he has developed while working for Eastern’s GEAR UP grant.

“His software makes it so much easier for the GEAR UP partners and staff,” said GEAR UP Project Director Linda Morgan. “The federal government requires so much documentation and tracking of students including tutoring, field trips, grades, and test scores. We must also track professional development and In–Kind match for teachers and administrators in our 23 partner schools. The Internet–based software makes it possible for GEAR UP staff who are located in remote areas to enter data from their locations, making tracking of activities much easier.”

Eastern Oklahoma State College received a $6.7 million federal GEAR UP grant and is beginning its fifth year of implementation. Eastern is partnered with 23 area schools to provide students with additional educational opportunities.
