Reyes to speak at college orientation

While regular classes at Eastern Oklahoma State College campuses in Wilburton and McAlester don’t officially begin until August 10, incoming freshman will get a taste of education beginning Saturday, August 7 through August 9, during orientation classes that will begin with Eastern’s dormitories opening at 8 a.m. Saturday for resident students to begin the college year.
Saturday is designed to allow students and their parents to begin moving in to the dormitories. Sunday activities are to orient new students who will be living in one of Eastern’s residence halls and their parents to the campus and aspects of resident college life. Students not living in a residence hall are not required to attend Sunday, however, must attend sessions slated for Monday according to Dean of Students Dr. Sally Davis.
Regular evening classes begin Monday, August 9, with enrollment continuing through August 16.
Inspirational speaker Rudy Reyes is slated for the 1 p.m. Sunday session for students attending the general session for parents and students in the Field House along with a welcome from Davis and Eastern President Dr. Steve Smith.
Rudy Reyes is a former Marine Sergeant featured in Generation Kill and author of Hero Living. He was team leader of more than 50 patrols behind enemy lines in the Persian Gulf, USMC Recon Rudy Reyes has seen combat action in three campaigns: Afghanistan ("Enduring Freedom" 2001 - 2002), and twice in Iraq ("Iraqi Freedom" 2003 and "Iraqi Freedom II" 2004).
Monday from 7:30 until 9 a.m. begins with registration in the Student Center and continues through 5 p.m. with meetings with Advisors by Division. The activities and sessions planned for this day have been designed to orient new students to college life. All students enrolled in OLS 1111 or AG 1011 must attend Davis said.
