WILBURTON, OK (Jan. 4, 2012) – A new ten-year strategic plan for southeast Oklahoma will be unveiled Thursday, Jan. 26 during an economic summit at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton.

The Southeast Oklahoma Regional Economic Summit is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Eastern’s Student Center Ballroom. Topics will include a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis of the region, regional demographics, sector strategies, a lay-off aversion plan and long-term strategic plans.

In February 2010, the South East Workforce Investment Board (Hugo), the East Central Workforce Investment Board (Shawnee) and the Eastern Workforce Investment Board (Muskogee) were awarded a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to collect data and develop a ten-year regional strategic plan for Haskell, Hughes, Latimer, Pittsburg, Pushmataha and McIntosh counties.

The goal of the plan is to counteract the effects of an economic shock and prepare the workforce to succeed in the global economy.

Several local organizations have partnered to develop the plan, including Eastern Oklahoma State College, Intellevue, Kiamichi Economic Development District of Oklahoma, Kiamichi Technology Centers, Logistic Specialties, Inc., McAlester Defense Support Association, MPower, Oklahoma Department of Commerce, Oklahoma Employment Security Commission and University of Oklahoma Outreach.

The summit is free and open to the public, but registration is encouraged. For more information or to register, visit www.seokinitiative.org.
