Fall 2000 Orientation

2000 July 28

More than 500 new students will hit Wilburton and Eastern Oklahoma State College when dormitories open at 8 a.m. Sunday (August 13) for the new school year at Eastern.

Eastern's bookstore opens at 10:00 a.m. followed by a free lunch in the West Cafeteria for OLS students and their parents and family beginning at 11 a.m.

General orientation registration begins in the field house at noon with orientation beginning for students at 1 p.m.

A parents reception will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom to meet Eastern President Rollin Reimer, the Eastern faculty, Dean of Students Butch Booth and Director of Financial Aid Leah Miller.

Orientation will continue for new students 8 a.m. Monday.

Classes will begin Tuesday (August 15), Eastern Vice President for Marketing and Enrollment Management Carla Freemyer said and many classes for fall remain available.

"We now have more than 450 students enrolled in McAlester classes," she said. "That's up 23 percent."

Eastern is offering 84 classes at the McAlester campus this fall as compared to 76 classes last year for an increase of 11 percent including a unique schedule of week-end classes designed for short-term, four-week, one or two day sessions in five general education subjects. Several internet classes are also available.

Students enrolling for the first time should bring high school transcripts, ACT scores and other necessary academic records. Those enrolling on the Wilburton campus should begin the process at the Office of Admissions in room 106B of the Library Building.

Those who have enrolled but not paid enrollment fees can now pay those fees by mail rather than making a trip to the Wilburton campus since the campus has initiated a new billing system designed to make financial transactions easier for the student.

Eastern offices will observe special office hours to assist with enrollment and schedule changes during the first week of class.

Admissions and counseling will be open until 7 p.m. along with the Financial Aid Office and Business Office. The Eastern Bookstore will remain open until 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 4 p.m. on Fridays.

Students enrolling in Eastern McAlester classes will be able to purchase books at the McAlester campus rather than making a trip to the campus bookstore in Wilburton.

"Eastern serves both the traditional student, those just out of high school, as well as the adult student returning to school well after their high school graduation," Freemyer said.

"Our average student age of 26 indicates that a large number of our students have families and have already entered the work force. Most have returned to gain college credit to advance in the job market.

"Our primary mission at Eastern is service to students with educational goals whether it is one class or a college degree," she said, "and, we'll do what's necessary to meet the student's need."

"We would encourage students to enroll as soon as practical to ensure adequate course selection. Many classes are beginning to close."

Students having questions on enrollment can contact the Counseling Center at 465-2361, ext. 298 or 255.
