. | World Series Game Three (Press Release 5-31-01) Office of Public Information Hank Mooney By Bobb Johnston
The Mountaineers run through the post season of JUCO baseball came to a close with the 12-0 five inning run rule by Dixie, the #3 team in the nation coming into the tournament. Eastern finishes their season fifth in the nation with a final record of 27-28. It was magical while it lasted. Eastern won 7 of their last 10 games, defeating Seminole State twice in the Regional, sweeping Maple Woods CC of Missouri two straight for the South Central crown and downing Iowa Western in the first round of the JUCO World Series. Eastern opened the tournament before a crowd of 9,120 on Sunday, the Tuesday game drew 8,115 bringing the total attendance for the three games to 20,750, easily the largest crowds to see the Mountaineers this year. Eastern's offensive assault in their opening game, a win, with 20 hits and nine runs surpassed their output of nine hits and 4 runs in their final two games, both losses. Cowley County advanced in the winners bracket by defeating Central Alabama 9-8 in the nightcap, scoring two, with two out in the bottom of the ninth. Cowley County will face North Central Texas Thursday night with Central Alabama squaring off against Dixie State in the Thursday matinee game. Eastern rode timely hitting and clutch pitching through that streak. Both eluded the Mountaineers against Dixie State. Eastern could only muster five hits, three of those being doubles. Chris Eng had a pair and Tommy Pratt added one. Dan Woelders started on the hill and lasted three batters into the third before giving way to Mike Musgrove. Woelders gave up five hits and five runs with one strikeout and two base on balls. Musgrove lasted just an inning and a third surrendering five hits and six runs while facing 10 batters. Joe Ornelas and B.J. Woelders each pitched one third of an inning, Ornelas facing four batters and B.J. Woelders used 12 pitches on two batters. Eng led the Mountaineers in hitting with
a .500 average, followed by Tommy Pratt at .429, Ryan Brnardic at .417.
Eric Keller hit the only homerun of the series for Mountaineers.
