Academic All-American
8-15-00

Three Eastern Oklahoma State College Lady Mountaineers have been named to the National Junior College Athletic Association list of Academic All-Americans and the team named NJCAA Team-of-the-Year Academic All-American with a collective grade point average of 3.49 NJCAA officials told Eastern recently.

The Wilburton college Athletic Director Jerry Smith said he was proud of Eastern's Lady Mountaineers and they have set a "sterling example."

"It's not every day honors like this are bestowed upon a team and individuals. This is a great honor for these young women and a reflection of Eastern's commitment to academics as well athletics," Smith said.

"Lady Mountaineers went 21-11 during the 1999-2000 season, won the Bi-State Conference Champions and have now been named Academic All-American with the third highest team grade point average in the nation.

"I just can't adequately express our pride in these girls. They have exhibited excellent sportsmanship, set a great example while maintaining excellent academic standing in the class room."

Individual Academic All-American for 1999-2000 went to Wilburton's Chari Browne, Brianne Stricklin of Paden and Dianne Cain from Crowder.

To qualify for the honor each girl had to be nominated by Eastern Athletic Director, completed three semesters of college work, participated one semester at the varsity level at the college they are representing and have accumulated a grade point of 3.6 or better.

All three Lady Mountaineers were two year lettermen for Eastern and were leaders on the team that qualified for the Region II tournament twice during their careers, reaching the semi-finals in 1999-2000.

Browne started at guard for two years and was third on the team for steals. Stricklin was the second leading free throw shooter at 83 percent and Cain, a forward, shot 47.8 from the floor.

Brown majored in Business Administration while at Eastern and was active in several campus organizations. She received numerous academic and athletic scholarships and was on the Dean's and President's Honor Rolls.

Cain majored in Pre-Medicine and was active in campus organizations including Fellowship of Christian Athletes, PTK and the Aggie Club. She received academic and athletic scholarships and was on the Dean's and President's Honor Rolls.

Stricklin majored in Agriculture Engineering while at Eastern and was active in several campus organizations including the Aggie Club, PTK, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Senate, United Ministry and was on the Dean's and President's Honor Rolls.
