Mentoring
program makes an impact on all involved
By Emily Hassler,
Statesman Columnist
Recently the members of the Eastern Honors Program have
been mentoring and tutoring elementary students on Mondays and Wednesdays
on the Wilburton campus. The tutoring sessions usually involve the children
and grandchildren of Eastern’s extended family and last two hours
in the East Cafeteria.
The Honors Program believes that this step is important
to the children, by not only helping out academically, but by developing
self-esteem and social skills. Each day that students are tutored, they
are able to ask college students questions and learn in a positive environment.
Of course, what would homework time be without snacks?
Another highlight of the time the kids spend with their mentors is snack-time.
And when the students finish their homework, they are rewarded with a little
outside time. This normally consists of action-packed games of freeze tag
and kickball.
While the mentoring program is set up to help out the
elementary students, it is benefiting the college kids as well. The Honors
Program allows interaction between two age groups that may not otherwise
take place and has been a success so far this year.
Eastern Honors program members participating include Mandy Atkinson, Kalah
Smith, Randy Tipton, Justin Casey, Katie Martin, Emily Hassler, Jamie Mouser,
Trevor Neering, Parker Richey, Takara Hawkins, Brittany Stephens, Blane
Stacy, Megan Pitts, Eric Shaw, Tyler Price and Jacquie
Meyer.

School shootings have become more common over the last
few years. Frighteningly, they can happen anywhere and anytime. If Oklahoma
Rep. Jason Murphey, R-Guthrie, has his way, some of our fellow students
could soon be vigilantes.
