Eastern baseball players receive All-Region honors


WILBURTON, OK (May 8, 2013) – Seven members of the Eastern Oklahoma State College baseball team have been named to the NJCAA Region II All-Region team. Three of those players also received Gold Gove honors.

Freshmen Stijn Van der Meer, Daniel Salters and Kaleb Matthews earned first team All-Region honors. Second team selections included sophomore Zair Koeiman and freshman Seth Hix. Earning honorable mention honors were sophomores Chance Burcham and Michael Freeman.

Van der Meer, Koeiman and Hix also received Gold Glove awards for their outstanding defensive play at their respective positions.

Van der Meer, an infielder from Rosmalen, Netherlands, had a .347 batting average this year with 10 doubles, two homeruns, 30 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. Salters, a catcher from Eufaula, hit for a .360 average, 15 doubles, four homeruns and 19 RBIs for the season. Matthews, an outfielder from Wellston, earned a .344 batting average and hit three doubles, seven homeruns and 31 RBIs.

Koeiman, an infielder from Willemstad, Curacao, batted a .351 average, 16 doubles, five homeruns and 29 RBIs this season. Hix, an outfielder from Mannford, had a .340 batting average, eight doubles, one homerun, 18 RBIs and 20 stolen bases this season.

Burcham, an infielder from Broken Bow, earned a .355 batting average, eight doubles, eight homeruns and 39 RBIs. Freeman, a pitcher from Broken Arrow, had four wins and three losses for 63 innings pitched. He walked 20 and had 53 strikeouts on the season.
