Eastern Oklahoma State College to add competitive shooting sports team this fall
WILBURTON, Okla. – Eastern Oklahoma State College will increase its number of competitive teams this fall with the addition of a shooting sports team. The shooting sports team will be added to the several existing competitive teams in the Agriculture Division.
“For years, the shooting sports industry has continued to gain popularity in youth,” said Larriann Livingston, dean of the Eastern Agriculture Division. “Across Oklahoma, numerous FFA chapters have started programs and actively compete each year. We’re starting this program to provide another avenue for students to attend college while continuing to participate in shooting sports. Building his program also allows another recruiting opportunity for us as a college.”
More than 12 students have accepted scholarships to compete as members of the shooting sports team beginning in the fall semester, Livingston said. As the program grows, she anticipates bringing in 15 to 20 freshmen each year.
“There are over 300 colleges and universities that have shooting sports programs in the United States,” Livingston said. “They compete in multiple challenges during tournaments held during both the fall and spring semesters.
“Our program will consist of trap, skeet, sporting clays and super sporting clays,” she added. “The individual and team scores are calculated based on how many targets are hit during the competition. Awards are given based on individual progress in each of the categories as well as the team's overall scores.”
Livingston said she plans for the team to compete in five tournaments during the academic year. Tournaments are held annually at both Oklahoma State University and Fort Hayes State University as well as two ACUI tournaments, one in Nashville, Tennessee, and the National Competition in San Antonio, Texas.
“The faculty of the Agriculture Division are excited for this new program and believe it will recruit a new group of students that we haven’t reached before,” Livingston said. “We are looking forward to having another competitive and successful team that our students can compete on and gain experience with as they complete their degrees here at EOSC.”
