Together, Eastern and the Choctaw Nation are committed to creating opportunity, cultural pride, and community growth across southeastern Oklahoma.


College Freshman Year Initiative (FYI)

The College Freshman Year Initiative (FYI) is a Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma program designed to closely support Choctaw students throughout their freshman year and beyond. The program builds a sense of community between Choctaw students, Eastern Oklahoma State College, and FYI program staff to empower participants to achieve academic and personal success.

Through mentorship, academic guidance, and life skills development, FYI helps students become confident, proactive, and accountable in their educational and professional journeys. Choctaw College Counselors are available on campus to assist students from their first semester through graduation or successful transfer to another institution.

Eligibility

  • Must be a Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma tribal member
  • ​First-year enrolled student at Eastern Oklahoma State College (Wilburton), Southeastern Oklahoma State University (Durant), or Carl Albert State College (Poteau)

Career Development

The Choctaw Nation Career Development Program provides financial assistance and career guidance to help tribal members gain the skills, credentials, and confidence needed to achieve rewarding, self-sustaining careers. Through individualized support and hands-on training opportunities, the program helps participants enhance workforce and academic skills while preparing for long-term success.

Career Development services are designed to assist Choctaw students and adults in earning recognized certifications or licenses that open doors to meaningful employment and career advancement. Participants benefit from one-on-one career counseling, personalized planning, and access to educational and financial resources that promote personal growth and economic stability.

Eligibility

  • Must be a Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma tribal member
  • Complete the online application
  • Must be pursuing an industry-recognized credential, certification, or licensure
  • Not enrolled in high school, unless participating in a Career Tech concurrent incentive
