The A.A. in Mass Communication is designed to outline the freshman and sophomore years of study for students planning to major in Mass Communication or related fields at a four-year college or university. Mass Communication major is designed to provide students with a theoretical and practical understanding of Mass Communication. Emphasis is placed on the practical aspects of news–gathering, writing, editing, and design. All students are afforded the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through work with the award-winning Eastern Statesman newspaper.

Mountaineer Radio
Eastern is home to Mountaineer Radio "The Mix" 93.1 FM and 104.9 FM, featuring top 40, light rock, classic rock, adult contemporary, pop and cross-over country music. Students in Eastern's Mass Communication degree program are involved in all aspects of the radio station, serving as interns and on-air personalities. Students produce news and weather reports, public service announcements and other programming. Students also have the opportunity to select music, produce their own show, help with live remotes and provide play-by-play and color commentary during sports broadcasts. The Statesman Newspaper
